Easter Letter 12.04.2019

12th April 2019

Dear Families,

As we take a break for the Easter Holiday we wish Mrs Hayley Callan our very best wishes, as she begins her maternity leave and we will all look forward to hearing her good news soon.

We also take this opportunity to wish Mrs Jeannie Holder, cook-in-charge at Hook School for 32 1/2 years a well deserved and happy retirement.

The recent Open Learning Afternoons, Mother’s Day Tea, Easter Eggstravaganza, Gruffalo Tea Party and Residential Visit to the Urdd Campus in Cardiff City have been well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by our children, and we are grateful to everyone for their support. These are events that are unique to our village school and are successful with the partnership of school staff and families working together, for our children.

Next term the Welsh National Tests will be administered from Tuesday 7th – 14th May for pupils in years 2 – 6 and the results of these assessments will be made available at the end of the summer term along with the annual summative reports.

Many congratulations are extended to William Harries, who came 1st in the recent 1500m inter-county cross country competition at Swansea, and to the school’s netball and cross country teams, who competed in local competitions. Next term we will be holding our annual sports day on Wednesday 26th June, (reserve date Wednesday 3rd July), and the reorganised date for the annual Urdd Rugby Tournament is on Wednesday 1st May at Neyland RFC.

We look forward to seeing everyone for the start of the Summer Term on Monday 29th April.

Happy Easter,

Hook School Staff

Newsletter 22/02/2019

Friday 22nd February 2019

Dear Families,

Thank you for attending the St David’s Day Concerts on Wednesday during our ‘Welsh Week’, and please call in to see examples of children’s learning on display in Dosbarth Heulog for all to see. This year we have been amazed by the enthusiasm and effort for all class and home learning Welsh activities, and look forward to seeing our pupils represent our school at the Pembrokeshire Schools Urdd Eisteddfod in Ysgol Hafan Y Mor, Tenby on Monday 18th March.

On the eve of the Wales v England 6 Nations Rugby Match, our school choir have performed and entertained shoppers at Tesco, Haverfordwest with Welsh and English songs and raised £221.87 for the FOHS, and all children have joined in with Dawnsio Gwerin Dances to end the Welsh Week.

The non-school uniform day was a hit with the children and raised £52.00 for the School Council and FOHS raised £200.00 from the selling of daffodils and donations at the concerts. We are extremely grateful to the FOHS and Hook Community Council for enabling the purchase of 15 computers for the school.

This term colleagues Mrs Evans, Miss Oriel and Mrs Teevan have been awarded certificates for areas of professional learning and we are all very proud of them. Mrs Holton will be joining UWTSD, Carmarthen, for a 5 week Welsh Sabbatical next half term and we wish her well and look forward to her return in time for the Urdd Residential in Cardiff.

We welcomed the Director, Kate Evan-Hughes to school this week, where she had the opportunity to see the school at work, and meet with children, parents, staff and governors.

In response to a safeguarding concern and also following advice from the Director, we ask that all families and visitors use the main gate in front of the school building at the start of the school day, to enable the double gates to be closed for safeguarding purposes. Mrs Jones will still operate the road crossing patrol at the double gates, and all children know to only cross the road with adult supervision. Only children will be on the yard at the start of the day with staff supervising from 8:40 a.m. Breakfast Club is available, with breakfast being served 8 – 8:20 a.m. and can be accessed by the rear gate, and Mrs Griffiths supervises all children in the hall until 8:40 a.m. This practice will start from Monday 4th March and we ask for your support.

I wish you all a wonderful half-term holiday,

Ms  L. John

Please complete one activity each week. When you have completed an activity please bring it into class on a Monday to share with your teachers and friends.  In addition to this you can login to HWB and use the tools to draw or paint your favourite dinosaur.  Please bring in your home reading books daily.  Thank you The Foundation Phase Team.

Can you make your own model dinosaur and name it? Use any cardboard boxes, yogurt pots, paints etc that you can find. Can you bring it into school and talk about it with your friends. Make a list of foods that a carnivore dinosaur might eat today.

Make a list of foods that a herbivore dinosaur might eat today.

Design your own dinosaur and label it. Write about what it looks like, what it eats and where it lives.

Borrow a dinosaur book from library. Share it with your family or bring it to school. Choose your favourite dinosaur. Can you create a fact page or poster about your dinosaur?

Can you find out:

Which was the tallest dinosaur? How heavy was the heaviest dinosaur?
